But unlike Elseworlds tales, Universe X is much longer, playing out over dozens of issues and multiple miniseries. Marvel eventually responded to the success of DC's Elseworlds, specifically Kingdom Come, with the Universe X series (even grabbing Kingdom Come artist, Alex Ross).

Initially, it presented narratives framed by Uatu the Watcher that were focused on a major event in the main timeline, but with divergent results. But in 1977 Marvel launched the What If? series. They merely had one continuity with a sliding timeline. For a long time, Marvel didn't use alternate realities at all. By contrast, Marvel has had an entirely different approach with alternate realities.
